While the Internet is still the #1 tool of job seekers, there are additional steps you can and should take to reach out to potential employers.
- Connect online and submit either an application or resume.
- Find out who the hiring manager is for the position you want. It’s not difficult if you use online tools like LinkedIn. Then contact him or her via email.
- A follow-up phone call can demonstrate initiative and make you stand out from other candidates who simply applied.
At each step, be considerate of the hiring manager’s time. Be persistent without crossing the line into too persistent.
If there are specific companies you would like to work for, see if they offer email notifications when new jobs are posted. If they participate in job fairs, attend the events and chat with the representative even if a position you want isn’t open yet.
In each interaction with a hiring manager or company representative, stay confident and professional because that’s what they’ll best remember.
